The virtual card (vcard) numbers are issued on a use-once and then discard basis, so each payment has its own unique card number. Next, each vcard is authorized for only a specific amount, so any attempt to run the card for even a penny more or a penny less will be rejected. Finally, the vcards are only valid for a short period of time, so if they aren't used, they expire, and the money comes back to your account.
